Father  Jiri Svoboda, Jurist doctor. Mother Bozena Svobodova (née Prochazkova).
 

Wife:
Milena Niznanska, chemistry engineer (Married in 1973.)

Children:
Jarmila (1974), doctor of medicine, member of MENSA.
Gabriela (1975), anthropologists.

Studies and professions:
Theatre drama at Academy of Performing Arts DAMU, Prague.
1963 expelled for political reasons.
1963 - 1966 warehouseman and driver.
Film and television direction at Academy of Performing Arts, Film Faculty FAMU, Prague.
1971 graduated as magister of Art.
1971 - 1993 director and scriptwriter, Film Studios Barrandov.
1986 named as Merited Artist.
1987 - 1989 Deputy Chairman, Union of Czech Dramatic Artists.
1987- 1990 Chairman, Union of Czech Film Artists.
1975 – 1990 Member of Czechoslovak Communist Party.
1990 – 1993 Chairman, Communist Party of Czech and Moravia.
1990 –1992 Deputy to House of Nations Federal Ass. of Czech and Slovak Federal Republic.
